Did you know that the liver, which performs the function of detoxification of our body, also needs to be detoxified? Let us look at some healthy recipes that help in liver detoxification.

The human liver is one of the most important organs of the body. Among the various functions that it performs, the liver is also responsible to remove the chemicals and toxic substances that not only exist in our body, but also those that enter our body through food, drinks and the air we breathe. Due to overeating or faulty eating habits, too many toxins get accumulated in the body, due to which the liver gets choked up. Nowadays, this has become very common because of unhealthy lifestyle, giving rise to health problems like indigestion, high cholesterol, tiredness, allergies, skin problems, constipation, etc. An unhealthy or weak liver can also cause emotional problems like anger, depression, stubbornness, rudeness, etc. If not given proper treatment, it can result into severe health problems. To avoid this, it is very necessary to detoxify and cleanse the liver regularly.
To detoxify the liver, it is necessary to stop consuming foodstuffs that are high in fats, caffeine, sugar, flour and other harmful substances. Liver detoxification can be done in several ways. One can opt for detoxification supplements or follow a nutritious diet. Here are some recipes that would help in liver detoxification.
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice, popularly known as lemon cayenne pepper drink is considered to be the most important remedy for liver detoxification. It can be made easily and should be consumed 7 – 8 times every day.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 3 teaspoons blackstrap molasses
- 16 ounces water
- 3 teaspoons virgin olive oil
- cayenne pepper – as per taste
Preparation
Take water in a vessel and keep it on a medium flame for heating. Remove from flame when it becomes hot, but before it starts boiling. Put in molasses, lemon juice, olive oil and a bit of pepper. This must be consumed as soon as you wake up in the morning. You can make a large quantity and store it in the fridge, so that you don’t have to make it every time you want a drink. However, remember that you should not drink the juice if it has been made the previous day.
Grapefruit Drink
This is a healthy drink made with fruits and vegetables and is rich in vitamins.
Ingredients
- grapefruits
- 5 inch ginger, sliced
- some cumin powder
- 6 fresh lemons
- 2½ – 3 cups water
- 4 garlic cloves
- 3 tablespoons flaxseed oil
- 3 – 4 mint leaves
Preparation
In a bowl, extract the juice of lemon and grapefruit and set aside. Chop ginger (without removing the skin) and garlic into fine pieces. Put them in a processor and blend by adding a little water. Then transfer into the bowl containing juice extracts, by straining through a sieve. Add water and pour the whole mixture into the processor. Add cumin powder and flaxseed oil and blend once. Top it with mint leaves and drink away to health.
Veggie Celery Drink
Herbs such as turmeric, fringe tree, dandelion, yellow dock, etc. are good for liver detoxification. Veggie celery drink is one of the best herbal drinks made of the herb called celery.
Ingredients
- 2 cucumbers
- 2 – 3 carrots
- 2 beetroots
- celery
Preparation
Wash all the ingredients thoroughly. Cut cucumber and celery and keep them aside. Before chopping beetroot and carrot, peel out their skin and then chop and mix them with the other ingredients. Place all in a food processor and blend. Transfer the whole thing into a glass and have it for breakfast.
While following the liver detox diet, you should avoid consuming anything that can give rise to toxins in your body. Your diet should include cauliflower, cabbage, onion, broccoli, garlic, etc. Consuming fruits, brown rice, legumes, kidney beans, cashew nuts, rice pasta, etc would also help in detoxification of the liver.
One must remember that proper functioning of the liver is essential to lead a life without any health problems and regular liver detoxification will surely help in keeping the body healthy. However, before starting on a detoxification diet, it is advisable to consult a physician or an expert dietitian.
